I find the best thing to do when on the phone is to be prepared. before you dial, write out a list of topics to talk about. Keep them simple at first: "How was your day?", "What did you have for dinner?", "Did you see American Idol this week?"
These sorts of easy questions help ease the way, but unfortunately, sometimes only get a "yes/no" style response.
The secret for longer, more wordy conversations is to engage your girlfriend in a conversation that chicks just love talking about.
